Deacon tight end considered among the tops in college football
Wake Forest University senior tight end Ben Wooster is one of 30 tight ends named to the preseason watch list for the 2009 John Mackey Award.
The Mackey Award, given annually to the top collegiate tight end, will be announced in December.
Wooster, a native of Suwanee, Ga. (Greater Atlanta Christian) was Wake’s starter at tight end in 2008 when he caught 24 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns. His final catch of the season was an eight-yard scoring pass from Riley Skinner that gave the Deacons their first lead in a 29-19 win over Navy in the EagleBank Bowl.
An Academic All-ACC pick as a junior, Wooster is again expected to be among Wake Forest’s top receivers in 2009. He was third on the team in receptions in 2008.
The Mackey Award is handed out by the Nassau County (N.Y.) Sports Commission. The award is named in honor of NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey who is considered to be among the best to have played the tight end position. Missouri’s Chase Coffman won the award last year.
Wooster is one of only two ACC tight ends named to the preseason watch list. Virginia Tech’s Greg Boone is the other.

Atlanta, GA – Second-year Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson will welcome 105 players back to campus Sunday as the Yellow Jackets begin preparations for the 2009 football season.
Tech is one of four NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) schools to begin preseason practice on Monday. Only Troy, which begins practice today, starts earlier than the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets will hit Rose Bowl Fields – Tech’s practice facility – for the first time Monday at 3 p.m.
“We’re excited to get started,” Johnson said. “We feel like we have potential to be a good football team, but we need to work hard and make improvements across the board. There is more depth this year and I think we’ll see some good competition, which I think is a good thing.”
Georgia Tech finished the 2008 season 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets shared the ACC Coastal Division title with Virginia Tech, earned a bid to the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and finished ranked 22nd in both major national polls.
Seventeen starters return in 2009, including 2008 ACC Player of the Year Jonathan Dwyer, who rushed for 1,395 yards last season. Two other players – junior wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and junior safety Morgan Burnett – were named to the preseason All-ACC team. Also back is senior guard Cord Howard, a second team All-ACC pick in 2008, and junior defensive end Derrick Morgan, an honorable mention All-ACC selection.
Georgia Tech practices are tentatively scheduled to be open through August 16. When classes begin August 17, practices will be closed.
The Great Yellow Jacket Encounter (Fan Day) is from 3-6 p.m. August 8th in Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Kickoff Luncheon is at the Cobb Galleria on August 28th.
Georgia Tech will kick-off the 2009 season September 5 at 1 p.m. against Jacksonville State.

The Two-Time Consensus All-American returns to Tallahassee with his youth football program.
DEION SANDERS PHOTO GALLERY
On Wednesday afternoon, former Florida State cornerback and NFL legend Deion Sanders made his way to the Moore Athletics Center to bring his Truth Select Football team to Florida State.
Sanders sponsors the league called Truth Select Football * through his Prime Time Association (http://www.ptasports.org/). The two teams traveling to Tallahassee are made up of over 70 youths from the Dallas Metro area and they field a 9-10 age group team and a team of 11-12 year olds. Many of the youths come from underprivileged backgrounds but all had to try out NFL style at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas to be selected for the team.
Deion Sanders is also committed to developing the stars of
tomorrow, which is why he pioneered The Truth Sports League. Children between the ages of 5-12 can participate in Football (2009), Baseball (2010) and Basketball (2010). These young men and women will learn the value of sportsmanship, education, and mentoring; as Deion and his team strive to impact the lives of all who participate. The Truth program offers tutoring, leadership courses, nutrition programs and other wholesome activities that are beneficial to the entire family.
