Blue Devils One Week From Opener

August 29th, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke football team held a two-hour practice focused on special teams Saturday morning. The Blue Devils are one week away from opening the season against Richmond and will start their game week Sunday evening.

“It was a great day today,” said head coach David Cutcliffe. “We went on the field and covered every situation that can happen in a ballgame with our kicking game. We put the players in every situation and coached them on what we want to happen. We don’t want to put a youngster in a ballgame in a situation he hasn’t faced before.”

This past week Duke has focused on preparing themselves for the upcoming season opener, basing practices on a typical game week and scenarios that happen during games. On Tuesday night the Blue Devils held a scrimmage to get used to playing under the lights as the Richmond game will begin at 7 p.m. After a light workout on Wednesday morning, the team was in full pads for Thursday and Friday.

“Tuesday was a game simulation scrimmage which went well,” said Cutcliffe. “Thursday and Friday were what I like to call typical Tuesday-Wednesday practices during the season where we put them in full pads and got after each other. Most importantly we put our complete Richmond gameplans in during those days.”

With the gameplan installed Coach Cutcliffe wants the team to execute better in all phases of the game during the final week of practice leading up to the first game. After a light practice Sunday evening the team will be off on Monday before continuing its preseason on Tuesday morning.

“We want to get pure execution offensively and minimize the wasted plays,” said Cutcliffe. “We need to put ourself in position to be successful on a consistent basis and get the game tempo ready. Defensively we need to be sharp on all of our adjustments, all of their formations and all of their personnel groupings so we can make our calls, line up and play fast. In the kicking game we want to play error-free football and we have a week to do that.”

The Spiders are the defending national champions in the Football Bowl Championship Division after posting a 13-3 overall record last season. They return 18 starters from the championship team and were voted No. 2 nationally in the preseason FCS coaches poll.

“Richmond is starting 15 fifth-year seniors and seven fourth-year juniors so this might be the most experienced football team that I have ever coached against and they are certainly worthy of the title of national champions they earned a year ago,” commented Cutcliffe.

Tickets are still available for the Duke-Richmond game which will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Sept. 5 in Wallace Wade Stadium. Season and single-game tickets may be purchased online at GoDuke.com or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 1-877-375-DUKE.

Terps break camp Saturday afternoon; Team votes captains

August 29th, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland Terrapins completed another step in their preparation for the 2009 season as football camp came to an end Saturday.

The Terps, who open the regular season at No. 12 California one week from today, spent about 90 minutes working out at the on-campus practice facility. The team was scheduled to have a pair of practices Saturday.

“We cut it short today,” head coach Ralph Friedgen said. “The kids were tired and it was humid. I didn’t want to get anyone hurt. We worked very hard all camp. I’ve been very pleased with camp. I’ll be anxious to see where we are when we get back.”

After a fairly sharp morning practice which focused on the California game plan, Friedgen decided the evening workout was not necessary. Following practice, the team held meetings and a short lifting session, and is now off until Monday.

“I feel like they’ve done everything they can do between winter, spring, summer and two-a-days,” Friedgen said. “Now it’s just a time to get ready to play. We’ll see where we are around this time next Saturday.”

Friedgen announced after Saturday’s practice that the team has voted four captains for the 2009 season.

Chris Turner and Phil Costa will represent the offense, while Nolan Carroll and Adrian Moten are the defensive captains.

Friedgen mentioned the possibility of naming captains over the summer to the team’s leadership council, which includes those four players plus Cory Jackson, Alex Wujciak, Da’Rel Scott, Torrey Smith, Davin Meggett and Kevin Dorsey, and the squad voted at Friday’s team meeting.

“I felt like we had a lot of quality kids to pick from,” Friedgen said. “I think they made a good choice.”

This is the first time the ninth-year head coach had the team elect season-long captains.

“If you elect the wrong captains, it can hurt you more than help you,” Friedgen said. “I just felt with this team we had some real strong leaders. The percentages were better with these kids than any time since I’ve been here, other than maybe the first year. We had some real strong leaders that year as well.”

Friedgen will name a special teams captain each week, who will join the other four at the coin toss. The team will also have a player from Maryland carry out the state flag and an out-of-state player bring out the American flag prior to each home game.

Terps Notes

Friedgen Radio Show: The Ralph Friedgen Radio Show, which is presented by Outback Steakhouse, begins Wednesday and airs weekly throughout the season. Wednesday’s show will take place at the Outback Steakhouse in Hyattsville, Md., as will shows on Sept. 23, Oct. 14 and Nov. 11. The show will air live from the Outback in Aspen Hill on Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 20, Oct. 7, Oct. 21, Nov. 11, Nov. 18 and Nov. 25.

Former Wolfpack Player Jim Ritcher Named Recipient of Ford Legends Award

August 29th, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Former Wolfpack player Jim Ritcher, who was the first center in college football history to win the prestigious Outland Trophy, has been named the 2009 recipient of the President Gerald R. Ford Legends Award.

The award will be presented during the 10th Annual Rimington Trophy Presentation on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb.

“I am blessed and truly honored to be the 2010 recipient of the Gerald R. Ford Legends Center Award. Being named in association with President Ford, the former recipients and the members of the Rimington Trophy-Boomer Esiason Foundation is significant because of their reputation for integrity,” Ritcher said.

To be considered for the President Gerald R. Ford Legends Center Award candidates must have either played the Center position at the collegiate or professional level; made extraordinary contributions to his team during his football career; or have proven to be an exemplary citizen, philanthropist or leader in the business or football community.

“We are thrilled to award Jim with this prestigious honor. Before the Rimington Trophy, he was one of only three centers in history to win a major college football award. Having made a successful 16-year career in the National Football League, Jim has established himself as one of the most outstanding centers of all time. I extend my sincere congratulations to Jim and his family,” BEF president Dave Rimington said.

A two-time All-America center at North Carolina State University, Ritcher provided a steady hand throughout the 1976-79 seasons. Twice he was awarded the Jacobs Trophy as the best blocker at the center position in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

During the 1979 season, Ritcher cleared the way as the Wolfpack captured the ACC title for the seventh time school history. At season’s end, he became the first center in history to win the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman.

Ritcher later enjoyed a 16-year career in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Falcons, appearing in four Super Bowls.

On February 8, 1987, Ritcher’s jersey number 51 was officially retired in a ceremony at Carter-Finley Stadium. In 1998, Ritcher became the third player from NC State to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Ritcher, who currently serves as a flight instructor and pilot for American Airlines, has had two sons play for NC State as well. John was tight end from 2002-05, while Harrison is currently playing fullback for the Wolfpack.

Clemson Football Practice Report: Day 20

August 28th, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Clemson, SC – Clemson held a short 16-period practice on Thursday afternoon on the practice fields behind the Jervey Athletic Center. The Tigers are preparing for the season opener against Middle Tennessee in just nine days.

Clemson will practice again on Friday afternoon and Saturday evening when it holds the “Beannie Bowl” in Death Valley.

“We had a short, but good practice,” said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney. “It was good on both sides of the ball because the focus was good. It has made a difference that we have focused on the opponent. We made some mistakes today, but overall, it was a good work day.

“We worked on Middle Tennessee’s tendencies, what they do in third and two, third and long, things of that nature. We are working on Middle Tennessee 100 percent of the time.”

Brandon Ford was in a yellow jersey as he continues to heal from a foot injury. Spencer Benton was out again, but is expected to return to kicking duties on Saturday when the team holds its annual “Beannie Bowl”. Jacoby Ford continues to improve from a hamstring injury and should be ready for the opener. Brandon Clear is back at full strength after a rib injury.

“The Beannie Bowl is a full rehearsal for the first game. We will go through our pregame warm ups, even run down the hill. They we will kick off right at 6:00 PM and practice various special situations.”
