Garnet and Gold balloons will be released Monday night at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Florida State fans will once again have a chance to release garnet and gold balloons into the air just as Osceola plants the spear when the Seminoles take on Miami in football on Labor Day night.
FSU cheerleaders will pass out balloons in FSU colors courtesy of “The Road To Tampa Bay” promotion of the ACC football championship game to be played in Tampa this year. The balloons are biodegradable and have been approved by the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife Management.
Florida State fans released thousands of balloons at the start of Seminole home games for years before concerns over environmental problems caused by the strings stopped the practice in the late 1980s. The balloons provided on Monday degrade more quickly than an oak leaf and will not have any strings attached.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former Boston College safety Mike Mayock has been named to the Class of 2009 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game Legends.
The Legends will be honored at this year’s Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game weekend. They will appear at the ACC Coaches and Awards Luncheon at noon on Friday, Dec. 4, and will be honored at the “ACC Night of Legends” held at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay on Friday evening. They will also be recognized during pre-game ceremonies at Raymond James Stadium for the 5th Annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship, which has an 8 p.m. kickoff on December 5 and will be nationally televised by ESPN.
The group of 12 former gridiron standouts from current ACC schools includes three former ACC Players of the Year, seven former All-Americas, nine players who combined for 79 years of professional football experience and 10 who were drafted into the National Football League including two first-round picks and the No. 1 choice in the 1987 draft (Testaverde).
In all, the collection of players and coaches combined to capture two national championships, one NFL World Championship and 15 ACC team titles.
The other legends include Danny Ford (Clemson), Bob Pascal (Duke), Chris Weinke (Florida State), Eddie Lee Ivery (Georgia Tech), Kevin Glover (Maryland), Vinny Testaverde (Miami), Kelvin Bryant (North Carolina), Willie Burden (NC State), Jim Bakhtiar (Virginia), Bob Schweickert (Virginia Tech) and Bill Barnes (Wake Forest).
Mayock was a third-team All-American for the Eagles in 1981. He posted 12 career interceptions and was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Mayock was drafted in the 10th round by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played two years in the NFL with the New York Giants. After retiring from pro football, he has served as an announcer covering college football for Fox Sports Net, CBS and ABC. He currently works for the NFL Network and is their lead expert on the NFL collegiate draft.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As Florida State’s Labor Day clash with rival Miami draws nearer, the Seminoles are narrowing their focus in preparation.
Detailed situational work against the scout team, which mimmicks the Hurricanes, was the primary focus throughout Thursday’s 22-period practice session. With the Seminoles dressed out in shells – shoulder pads and helmets – it’s clear that execution is of greater importance than physical pounding.
“We’ll cut (the contact) down,” said offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher. “We’ve got to get alignments, execution and assignments; little details. Then we’ve got to get them hungry and ready to hit on Monday.”
With Fisher and defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews hammering away at the importance of execution over the past 10 days or so, the Seminoles seem to be responding positively.
“We’re getting a lot better than that,” Fisher said of the offense. “When you start to work on a situation … they’re getting a lot better.
“The closer it gets, they start to hone in and focus.”
Quarterback Christian Ponder connected with wide receiver Richard Goodman on a pair of touchdown passes as the offense worked against the scout team defense down near the goal line. EJ Manuel also hooked up with tight end Beau Reliford for a score.
Still, there were plenty of highlights on the defensive side of the ball. Linebackers Nigel Bradham and Dekoda Watson each registered touchdown-denying pass breakups in the same drill.
The Seminoles closed out the practice working on their 1-minute offense from inside the 50-yard line. Ponder led the first unit to a score on a six-play drive, featuring a pair of completions to Rod Owens and Jarmon Fortson’s catch-and-run for a touchdown.
Senior cornerback Patrick Robinson also logged his last of three pass break-ups on the day, to temporarily slow the drive.
Manuel managed just three short completions before the clock ran out on his series at the helm of the second-team offense.
Getting a competitive look from the FSU defense in practice figures to better prepare the offense for a Miami defensive unit that returns a majority of starters from a young unit.
“It will definitely be a bigger challenge for us (offensively), that’s for sure,” said Fisher, whose offense rolled up 469 yards against the ‘Canes in last season’s 41-39 triumph.
Another encouraging sign for Andrews’ defense Thursday was the play-making ability of some FSU youngsters. A pair of freshmen – cornerback Greg Reid and free safety Justin Bright – came up with athletic interceptions during one pass skeleton period, while classmate Jajuan Harley and senior Jamie Robinson logged pass break-ups.
