Three Duke Football Players Receive ACC Weekly Honors

November 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Durham, NC – Three Duke football players — Thaddeus Lewis, Will Snyderwine and Conner Vernon — earned weekly honors from the ACC following the Blue Devils’ 28-17 road victory over Virginia this past Saturday.

Thad LewisThad LewisLewis shared Offensive Back of the Week accolades with Miami’s Jacory Harris. In guiding the Blue Devils to the win in Charlottesville, Lewis completed 24-of-40 passes for 343 yards against a Cavalier defense that entered the game ranking first in the ACC and fifth nationally in passing defense by allowing 151.3 yards per game. The Opa-Locka, Fla., native threw the game-winning 42-yard touchdown pass to Vernon with 3:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Snyderwine was honored as the league’s Specialist of the Week after booting five field goals against the Cavaliers. The Potomac, Md., native connected on kicks from 44, 28, 34, 25 and 43 yards, with the five field goals matching the fourth-highest single-game total in ACC history. Snyderwine gave Duke a 9-0 lead with three field goals in the first 15:05 of the contest, and later pushed the Blue Devils into a 12-10 advantage with a 25-yarder just 1:10 into the fourth period. His final kick of the day — a 43-yard effort — came with 1:05 remaining in the game and gave Duke a two-possession, 11-point cushion.

Vernon captured the Rookie of the Week citation after catching seven passes for 103 yards and the game-winning touchdown from Lewis. A product of Miami, Fla., he averaged 14.7 yards per catch with five receptions producing first downs while the 100-yard effort marked his third of the year — all against ACC opponents and a school single-season record for rookies. Also during the game, Vernon established Duke’s single-season record for pass receptions by a freshman with 38.

Other weekly award winners included North Carolina’s Tydreke Powell (Defensive Lineman), Florida State’s Rodney Hudson (Offensive Lineman) and Boston College’s Luke Kuechly (Defensive Back).
