ACSMA honors Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams and BC’s Luke Kuechly as best first-year players.

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Raleigh, NC – Thanks to Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech’s rushing record for rookies didn’t last very long.

The Hokies’ record-setting running back was named Tuesday as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Rookie of the Year after a season in which he broke Darren Evans’ 1-year-old school and conference mark for rushing yards by a freshman.

Williams was the overwhelming choice as the ACC’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, receiving 34 votes from 40 voting members. Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, who had 29 votes, was named the top newcomer on defense, and no other player on either side of the ball received more than four votes.

Separate votes were held for the offensive and defensive awards, and those vote counts were combined to determine the overall award winner.

Williams became the first player from Virginia Tech to win the ACC’s award for rookies. The last Hokie to win a conference Rookie of the Year award was Kevin Jones, who was named the Big East’s top newcomer in 2001.

Not bad for someone who entered his freshman season as the third-stringer behind Evans and Josh Oglesby, but worked his way into the starting lineup before the opener against Alabama.

That came after Evans, who had a then-school record 1,265 yards as a freshman last year, was lost for the season after hurting his knee during the preseason.

The Hokies (9-3, 6-2) certainly didn’t miss a beat with Williams. He rushed for 1,538 yards – the fourth-best single-season total in ACC history – to shatter Evans’ mark, and he enters his bowl game 110 yards shy of Jones’ 6-year-old school record for players from all classes.

Williams also wound up tying the ACC single-season record with 19 rushing touchdowns, matching North Carolina’s Don McCauley’s big season in 1970. His 20 overall TDs set the league’s scoring record for freshmen, breaking the mark of 18 set by North Carolina State’s T.A. McLendon in 2002.

And instead of wearing down, he seemed to get stronger as the season progressed. Williams had four touchdowns in each of his last two games, finishing the regular season with a season-high 183-yard performance against rival Virginia.

ACSMA names Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson 2009 ACC Coach of the Year

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Greensboro, NC – Georgia Tech coach, Paul Johnson, once again was the overwhelming choice as the ACC’s top coach as selected by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Johnson received 24 of a possible 40 votes cast by ACSMA members, easily outdistancing his counterpart in this week’s Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney had 10 votes, followed by Duke’s David Cutcliffe (4) and Boston College’s Frank Spaziani (2).

This marks the sixth time a Georgia Tech coach has received the award, and the third time this decade after George O’Leary won it in 2000.

Johnson claimed the award last year after the Yellow Jackets burst onto the scene and ran his complex option-based offense with aplomb, and they one-upped themselves this year by winning the Coastal Division for the first time since 2006, claiming a spot in the league title game and vaulting into the top 10.

The run-first offense led the ACC in scoring (35 points per game), total offense (440.5 ypg), rushing offense (305 ypg) and pass efficiency (160.7 rating). As a result, five starters made the All-ACC first team – including quarterback Josh Nesbitt, running back Jonathan Dwyer and even a receiver in Demaryius Thomas. They helped Georgia Tech (10-2, 7-1) finish with the ACC’s best overall and conference records of the season, and will face the Tigers for the 2009 crown and a spot in the FedEx Orange Bowl.

Florida State Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden Announces Bowl Will Be His Last Game

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Bowden, who will complete his 34th season as coach at Florida State,
will coach the Seminoles in the bowl game and finish his career as one
of the winningest coaches in the history of major college football.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida State University Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden announced Tuesday that the Seminoles’ upcoming bowl game will be his
last game. Bowden, who will complete his 34th season as coach at
Florida State, will coach the Seminoles in the bowl game and finish his
career as one of the winningest coaches in the history of major college
football.

“The bowl game will be my last game as head football coach at Florida State,” said Bowden.  “It’s been a great 34 seasons.

“I’d
like to thank my wife Ann and my family for their love and support.
There were a lot of nights when I was on the road and not at home at
the dinner table.  We all know that’s part of it.

“I’d also
like to thank the coaches and their families who helped build the
program into something that is special.  You can’t have a successful
program without players and we have been blessed to have young men who
are winners both on and off the field.  I want to thank them and their
families for committing 4-5 years of their lives to me and to FSU.

“Finally,
I’d like to thank the University and FSU fans who have supported the
Florida State program.  We’ve got one more game and I look forward to
enjoying these next few weeks as the head football coach.”

Bowden
was named National Coach of the Year six times (1979, 1980, 1991, 1992,
1996 and 1999), and a national award presented by The Fellowship of
Christian Athletes bears his name. He led Florida State to national
championships in 1993 and again in 1999, the latter being the first
team in the history of the Associated Press poll to go wire-to-wire
ranked No. 1.

Wetherell, who will retire from the presidency of Florida State when
his successor is installed as president — perhaps within a few months
– said Bowden’s “sterling personality and character” personified
Florida State University.

Bobby Bowden
is not only one of the most outstanding college football coaches in
history but also a great man who you would want as a mentor to your
children,” Wetherell said.

“Every true Seminole fan appreciates
all that he has done in service to the university and all that he has
accomplished for its football program — two national championships, 12
ACC championships, 14 straight seasons among the Associated Press’ Top
Five, two Heisman Trophy winners and a Rhodes Scholar, induction into
the College Football Hall of Fame — but more than that, he has been an
off-the-field mentor to so many young men looking to their future.”

Wetherell,
who was one of those young men, said he hopes Florida State’s Athletics
Department will plan a celebration and recognition for Bowden during
next year’s football season.

In his own tribute to Bowden, Wetherell said:

Bobby Bowden
has served as our head football coach and inspirational `friend-raiser’
for more than 30 years. He led our football program to unprecedented
success and established it among the nation’s elite for many years. He
set records of achievement on the field that will probably never be
equaled.

Bobby Bowden
contributed in many ways to the overall success and advancement of a
young and growing university, and the entire Bowden family is also a
major part of this success story.

“I played for Bobby Bowden 45 years ago, when I was a young man, and he was an assistant coach under Bill Peterson.

“The
bond between player and coach is strong enough, but our relationship
forged even more powerful bonds as we worked hard for the university’s
advancement. With me and other presidents, Bobby Bowden
helped raise public and private dollars to build some of the most
impressive athletics facilities in the nation and to bring additional
recognition to Florida State’s academic achievements.

“Millions
of Americans could see the good work and academic contributions of our
university through the window of national television –a window that
winning football teams provide for their institutions.

Bobby Bowden,
in many ways, became the face of Florida State. It was his sterling
personality and character that personified this university. And because
his influence was so powerful, we were able to advance far beyond what
many of us ever dreamed.”

Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association Announces 2009 All-ACC Football Teams

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · ACC

Raleigh, NC – A telling sign of how prolific Georgia Tech’s offense was this season: Nearly half of its starters made the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team.

The 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets placed five offensive players, and six players overall, on the All-ACC team announced Monday after a vote conducted by 40 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Among the Coastal Division champions on the first team were quarterback Josh Nesbitt, running back and reigning ACC player of the year Jonathan Dwyer, receiver Demaryius Thomas, guard Cord Howard and center Sean Bedford.

They were among the cornerstones of a group that led the ACC in scoring (35 points per game), total offense (440.5 ypg), rushing offense (305 ypg) and pass efficiency (160.7 rating).

They and all-league defensive end Derrick Morgan helped the Yellow Jackets vault into the top 10 before last week’s loss to rival Georgia and claim a spot in this week’s conference title game against Atlantic Division winner Clemson, with the winner in Tampa, Fla., advancing to the Orange Bowl.

The Tigers had three players on the first team, led by multi-threat star C.J. Spiller – who made the first-team as a specialist and the second team as a running back. He averaged 76 yards rushing, led the league with an average of 183.9 all-purpose yards and returned four kickoffs for touchdowns. Joining him are teammates Michael Palmer at tight end and DeAndre McDaniel at safety.

Virginia Tech freshman Ryan Williams was one of four Hokies on the first team. He led the ACC with an average of 128.2 yards and a total 20 touchdowns, and was joined by kicker Matt Waldron, linebacker Cody Grimm and punter Brent Bowden.

Miami and North Carolina each landed four players on the first team.

All four of the Tar Heels’ selections – end Robert Quinn, linebacker Quan Sturdivant and backs Kendric Burney and Deunta Williams – came from a defense that statistically was the best in the ACC, allowing averages of 267.8 total yards and 92.8 yards on the ground.

Offensive tackle Jason Fox, defensive tackle Allen Bailey, cornerback Brandon Harris and kicker Matt Bosher – who also was the second-team punter – represent the Hurricanes.

Boston College was the only other school with multiple first-team selections, offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo and freshman linebacker Luke Kuechly, the league’s leading tackler.

Duke’s Donovan Varner, who led the conference with 5.4 receptions per game, joined Thomas at receiver.

The rest of the first team includes NC State tight end George Bryan, Florida State offensive guard Rodney Hudson, Virginia defensive tackle Nate Collins and Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak. The only school with no first-team selections was Wake Forest, and defensive tackle John Russell was the Demon Deacons’ lone second-team honoree.

The 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team as voted on by 40 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. NOTE: A first-team vote was worth two points and second team vote one.
