Beamer hopes 2012 class helps BCS woes

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer has had no problem winning ACC games since the Hokies joined the conference, but one of the biggest criticisms he has faced is the program's lack of success in BCS bowls as the Hokies fell to 1-5 after their loss to Michigan in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. On Wednesday, Beamer said he thinks this year's recruiting class, which was ranked No. 25 in the country by ESPN RecruitingNation, can help change that. "I can tell you I think we took another step towards reaching our goals here at Virginia Tech," Beamer said.

FSU adds elite speed with two-sport stars

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

You want to know just how much faster Florida State got on national signing day? Ask Bob Braman, the Seminoles’ track coach. Jimbo Fisher wasn’t the only winner on Wednesday. Braman raved about his two newcomers, football signees Marvin Bracy, a wide receiver, and cornerback Ronald Darby, who will play both sports. “You’re getting two of the best guys that we’ve ever gotten, and they’re football players, which obviously makes our team unbelievably strong,” he said.

Ryan McGee: The other side of signing day

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

ESPN The Magazine's Ryan McGee went behind the scenes with David Cutcliffe on Wednesday and wrote a great piece on what it has been like for Duke's staff to compile its 2012 recruiting class. The Blue Devils aren't going to get the same national attention as Florida State, but that doesn't mean Cutcliffe's staff isn't working just as hard, if not harder, at bringing in the right players. Here's an excerpt from McGee's story: The coaching staff at Duke, winners of six games over the last two years and no bowl invites since 1995, works just as hard, arguably harder, than the schools who dominate the headlines on the first Wednesday of February.

2012 class helps Miami push forward

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

As a result of a highly publicized NCAA investigation, Miami suspended eight players for the 2011 season opener against Maryland. It self-imposed a bowl ban a day after becoming bowl eligible. And it let the distractions and implications of the case eat at the heart of what could have been a much better team last year. What Miami didn’t do, though, was self-impose any scholarship losses, or fear possible future sanctions, and as a result, Al Golden and his staff lured in one of the best recruiting classes in the country on Wednesday -- better than defending ACC champ Clemson, and better than in-state rival Florida.

ACC’s lunchtime links

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

Still digesting Wednesday's recruiting news? Here's more ... Let's start with a link to more ACC recruiting links. Georgia Tech's main headline from signing day was about a recruiting violation. Clemson running back Mike Bellamy's status is day-to-day, receiver Joe Craig got the boot, and Dabo Swinney got a top 10 class. Despite the 2-10 finish in 2011, Randy Edsall's recruiting class was a step in the right direction. No more Luke Kuechly, no more Mark Herzlich, but the Eagles have helped rebuild the linebacker position with this class.

2012 recruiting team wrap-ups

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

While the star systems help evaluate each recruit and grade each class , the most important aspect of signing day is whether or not each program filled its specific needs at each position. Here’s a quick look at each school in the ACC and the biggest need it filled on signing day: BOSTON COLLEGE: The Eagles wanted to continue to build the depth on both lines, and did that with three offensive linemen and a defensive end. BC might have gotten a future star in four-star guard Frank Taylor, who is rated No.

Nobody failed, and Florida State finished with the No. 2 class in the country, followed by No. 8 Miami and No. 9 Clemson, and Virginia Tech worked its way back in at No. 25. Overall, it was a good day for the ACC. Here's a look back at some of the biggest surprises nationally on signing day, including Virginia Tech's snag of athlete Joel Caleb, who seemed to favor West Virginia. ESPN RecruitingNation handed out grades for each conference, and Florida State was at the head of the class with an A.

It was another whirlwind of a signing day, with a little bit of drama and a few surprises. Now that we’ve had some time to digest Wednesday’s news, here’s a quick overview of 2012 signing day in the ACC: Top class: Florida State is the undisputed heavyweight champion in the ACC this signing day. The Noles brought in 10 ESPNU 150 commitments and finished with the No. 2 class in the country. Clemson WR Joe Craig dismissed from team

February 1st, 2012 · No Comments · ACC Football News

Clemson receiver Joe Craig has been dismissed from the team, the school announced on Wednesday evening. “Joe Craig has been permanently dismissed from the Clemson football team for a violation of team rules,” coach Dabo Swinney said in a prepared statement. “We wish him the best as he continues his academic and athletic career.” Craig was a redshirt freshman wide receiver on Clemson’s 2011 team. He finished the season with three receptions for 18 yards in seven games.
